“Ministers must come armed with proposals”
As reported last week ministers have invited unions to discuss the Government’s evidence to review bodies for 2023. On Thursday the Minister for the Cabinet Office, Jeremy Quin, wrote to the civil service unions inviting us to meet to discuss the government’s approach to the senior salaries review body and the delegated pay arrangements governed by the remit guidance issued each year by treasury and cabinet office.
I responded on Friday in a joint letter with Mike Clancy, General Secretary of Prospect. In that response, I made it clear that whilst we welcome the opportunity to discuss the cost of living crisis, ministers, employers and the review body already know the impact this is having on our members and the solutions we want the government to explore.
What is missing from this process is any proposals from government to address them. We will of course make ourselves available urgently for talks, but if they are to have meaning, ministers must come armed with proposals.
We will always engage constructively with ministers, but with the crisis across the public sector worsening by the day, and our own members in the Fast Stream balloting for strike action at this very moment, what we need from government is urgent action to address the underlying causes of these disputes.
