Internship at the FDA
For the first time, the FDA will be recruiting an intern this summer, to provide experience across a range of roles and skills for someone who may be interested in a career in trade unions, politics or campaigning.
About us
The FDA is the trade union representing professionals and managers in public service. We believe that public services – and those who work in them – matter. We stand up for our members and strive to improve their working lives, and seek to help them make the most of their careers.
We work with members across more than 200 Government departments, agencies, and arm’s-length bodies in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and overseas. We are proud of our history. For over one hundred years, we have been advocating for quality public services and representing public servants. We have improved their pay, pensions, and working conditions; we have championed equality and fought discrimination; we have promoted civil service values, and were fundamental in the establishment of the civil service code. As a powerful trade union, we have access and influence at the heart of government and are hoping to provide a unique insight in to the work we do.
About you
This internship would suit a student or recent graduate with an interest in developing a career either within the trade union movement, or more broadly in advocacy, campaigns, government relations or communications. No prior experience is needed, but an interest in current affairs, international development, politics or trade unions is particularly welcome. You may be studying a related field (although this is not a requirement) or just be interested in gaining work experience in the sector, either way we would love to hear from you!
The internship
This is a full-time six-week internship, starting on the 14 June 2021. While occasional travel to our office in London Bridge may be necessary when restrictions allow, this role offers flexibility, and the successful applicant will have the opportunity to work independently from home – as such we welcome applicants from across the UK. Any associated travel costs would be covered and we are very open to discussing and accommodating individual circumstances where possible. Applicants will require access to a laptop or computer for the duration of the internship in order to login to our cloud-based system remotely. Renumeration for the six-week period will be based on an annual salary of £25,492.
The intern will work closely with one of our National Officers and our communications team to help with a range of responsibilities in a diverse and challenging environment. Our ambition is to provide meaningful experience to an individual by engaging them on a bespoke project. This will involve conducting desk-based research, drafting content and supporting with event logistics. We’ll also provide opportunities for our intern to meet with senior stakeholders, get a good understanding of how a busy, proactive union operates see how government and the civil service operates.
How to apply
The deadline for applications is Wednesday 28 April at midday. Applicants will be updated week commencing 3 May, with interviews scheduled for 18 or 20 May. To apply, please send your CV and covering letter (no more than 2 sides of A4) to info@fda.org.uk with the subject line ‘Internship application’.
