FDA welcomes proposals on risk-based exclusion of MPs from Parliament

The House of Commons Commission has published a report outlining their proposals on risk-based exclusion of MPs from the Parliamentary estate.

Responding to the report ‘Risk-based exclusion of MPs: consultation response and proposals’, FDA National Officer Jawad Raza says:

“We welcome the Commission’s proposals on precautionary exclusion, which show that the concerns of our members have been heard.

“The FDA has long campaigned for this and Parliament, like any other workplace, should be a safe place to work. As it currently stands, even if an MP is arrested for serious sexual offences, there is no way to prevent them from attending the Parliamentary estate and the policy of relying on a voluntary ‘gentleman’s agreement’ simply does not cut it.

“Under these new proposals, if the House is presented with credible allegations of sexual or violent offending by the police at any point in the criminal justice process, including but not confined to the point of arrest or charge, it will start a risk based assessment which could lead to exclusion from the Parliamentary estate.

“The House must now agree to implement these proposals without delay to protect its staff.”
