Job Advert: National Officer (Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion) – Part-time

Job title: National Officer – Equality, diversity and inclusion (ED&I)

Hours: 21 hours per week to be worked flexibly

Salary range: £50k – 64k FTE

For over a century the FDA has been a strong, pragmatic trade union representing public sector leaders and professionals working in the civil service and parliaments across the UK. The FDA is not party-political and seeks to improve members’ working lives and the public services they deliver. We act as a powerful voice for public services and the people who deliver them. We are a growing and vibrant union with an influential membership of more than 22,000 senior managers, policy advisors, diplomats, tax professionals, economists, solicitors, prosecutors and other professionals work across government and the NHS.

As part of our expansion of National Officer resource, we are looking to recruit a part time (21 hours/3 days a week worked flexibly) National Officer to develop and lead the unions internal and external equality strategy, activity and policy. The primary responsibilities will be working with the FDA equality diversity and inclusion committee, developing campaigns and its workplan, championing the needs of members belonging to equality groups, developing initiatives to increase member and rep involvement, alongside supporting the FDA bargaining agenda to improve members’ working conditions.

A more detailed summary of the key responsibilities of the role, together with an outline of the skills, experience and personal qualities that we are seeking for this position, are set out in the job description and person specification. This is a challenging role but you’ll be part of a great team of National Officers and will be able to enhance your skills and experience with tailored development and support.

You will be expected to travel across the UK on a regular basis and will need to be flexible in your approach. The union operates a hybrid working approach, which enables National Officers to work flexibly on location, but there is a clear expectation for National Officers to attend the FDA HQ in London Bridge on a regular basis for team meetings/collaborative working as required. The successful candidate will also be expected to undertake face to face meetings and work with outside organisations, members, branches and employers that can be in a range of civil service locations (but predominantly in London). This will be discussed in detail with the successful candidate and is likely to change as the FDA adapts to the future world of work and we develop our approach to the use of our office space.

The FDA offers a good package of terms and conditions, including 31 days annual leave plus 11 public and privilege days, alongside a high-quality defined benefit pension scheme. The FDA is committed to equality of opportunity and treatment both in the service it provides to its members and as an employer.

Prior experience as a national official in a trade union is not essential, although all applicants will need to demonstrate a successful track record in their field of related expertise. Starting salary is expected to be C£50k FTE depending on experience.

To apply, candidates should submit a curriculum vitae together with a cover letter of no more than 750 words, outlining why your skills, experience and motivation make you the right person for the job. Submit your CV and cover letter by email, for the attention of (FAO) Esther Farnese, to info@fda.org.uk.

The closing date for receipt of applications (CV’s and cover letter) is: 5PM on 8 September 2023

Interviews will be held on: 21 September 2023
