Heart Unions week: Five great reasons to join the FDA today

As part of the TUC's HeartUnions week - a week of activity that highlights the good work that unions do every day to offer everyone a voice at work - we list five ways the FDA can empower you

1. We speak up for you and challenge myths about what you do

When politicians attacked the civil service recently over preparations for Britain's exit from the European Union, the FDA was there to speak up for the impartiality and professionalism of the civil service - and our response was covered by the BBC, Sky News, The Times, BuzzFeed, The Guardian, PoliticsHome and more.

2. We are there when you need help at work

This year we helped Deb Gibson. Deb is recovering from cancer and, despite several medical reports recommending that a three-hour daily commute was detrimental to her health, her employer refused to allow her to work from home. The FDA’s involvement on Deb’s behalf resulted in her employer finally recognising that Deb needed to be given some flexibility to let her do her job well.

Deb told us: “Thank goodness for the FDA - that's all I can say. If it had not been for the union I would have given in to pressure from employers to go into work, and been very ill and probably no longer working at this moment in time. The support of the FDA has saved my career and enabled me to carry on working.”

3. We help you develop your career and build your skills

1hu3

We’ve already helped more than 3,700 civil servants build their professional skills, get more out of their jobs, and move ahead. One member who recently attended an FDA Learn/Keyslills course told us it had made them “more proactive and confident” – and directly contributed to a promotion.

They said: “I was successful in being invited to interview, and then was successful at the interview stage too! Thank you for running such an effective course which boosted my confidence and improved my style and structure. I have no doubt that the result would have been different had I not attended that course."

4. We negotiate collectively in your workplace

1hu4

When we stand together as a union, we win for our members. We’ve so far secured more than £200,000 for CPS Direct staff after challenging the way holiday pay was calculated, ending a system that penalised public servants for working anti-social shifts to keep the justice system running. After we took action, members like Dave Dohrn received payments of several thousand pounds.

"I probably would never have found about it without the FDA. And if I had found out about it, I probably wouldn't have gotten around to doing anything about it!” – Dave Dohrn, FDA member

5. We campaign for a fair and fully-funded pay rise for you and your colleagues

1hu5

We believe all public servants deserve fair pay for the vital work they do. Our ‘Public Services Need Fair Pay’ campaign has helped more than 3,000 members understand the impact of public sector pay policy, and we’re continuing to make the case for change, taking the message directly to pay review bodies, MPs and ministers.

The FDA can only do all of this because of the collective strength of our membership.
