FDA General Secretary Dave Penman appeared on the BBC Radio 4 World at One programme, in response announcements of 30% civil service job losses at the Ministry of Defence (MoD) as part of the Government's Strategic Defence and Security Review.
Penman told the BBC:
"You cannot increase the military capability of the UK without consummately increasing the number of civilian staff that support the armed forces personnel on deployment.
"We have seen this time and time again: it's very easy for Chancellors or Ministers to look for cuts from the civilian staff, it is more politically difficult to look for cuts from the military staff and we end up with this mismatch between the resources that are available to support our armed forces and the number of armed forces themselves."

Assistant General Secretary Rob O'Neill appeared on the British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS), expressing members' "shock at the scale of the cuts announced."
He told the BFBS: "In the last Parliament we saw a third of the civil service staff at the MoD cut. Our members were expecting some significant cuts but these are very substantial".
O'Neill added that the union is "anxiously awaiting the details of these cuts but they seem very severe… It's very difficult to see cuts on the scale announced taking place without there being compulsory redundancies".
